My Trip

A two-week, season-only course from late October to mid-November, when Beijing turns yellow and red. From a ginkgo-lined avenue once walked by envoys, to 600-year-old ancient trees, to the Fragrant Hills foliage. A seasonal deep-dive that only holds in this window.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Diaoyutai Ginkgo Avenue钓鱼台银杏大道

    Street · 60 min stay

Beijing's finest ginkgo-lined avenue, running along the east wall of the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse. In early November, when the pavement is blanketed in golden leaves, photographers flock here. The very image of autumn Beijing.

    Wuta Temple (Zhenjue Temple)五塔寺 (真觉寺)

    Temple · 50 min stay

A temple with an Indian-style Vajra-throne stone pagoda (Ming dynasty). When the two 600-year-old ginkgos before the pagoda turn yellow, the contrast with the off-white stone pagoda is fantastic. A quiet hidden spot to enjoy ginkgos without crowds.

Ditan Park (Altar of the Earth)地坛公园

    Park · 60 min stay

A square altar park where the emperor sacrificed to the earth. The ginkgo avenue from the west to south gate becomes a golden tunnel in autumn. The color contrast between the altar's gray walls and the yellow ginkgos is antique in a way that's quintessentially Beijing.

    Fragrant Hills Park香山公园

Autumn leaves · Trekking · 120 min stay

The byword for Beijing autumn foliage (hongye). The peak is late October to early November, when smoke-tree (huanglu) foliage turns the whole mountain red. Climb Xianglu Peak for a view of the red mountain and the city at once. Weekends are extremely crowded, so a weekday and an early hour are recommended.
