The definitive first-timer's route, walking Beijing's central axis in a straight line from south to north. Pass through Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, then climb Jingshan Park right behind the north gate for a sweeping view over the entire palace. Continue on foot to the Beihai imperial garden and the hutongs, taking a taxi only for the final leg to Nanluoguxiang.
