Beijing's largest Lamaist temple, where the Yongzheng Emperor's princely residence became a Tibetan Buddhist temple under the Qianlong Emperor. The 18m Maitreya carved from a single sandalwood trunk in the Pavilion of Ten Thousand Happinesses (Guinness-listed) is overwhelming. The density of local worshippers holding incense shows it's a living place of faith.

Confucius Temple (Beijing)孔庙

Across from Yonghegong, the shrine where Yuan, Ming and Qing emperors sacrificed to Confucius. The 198 'jinshi' steles in the courtyard bear the names of 50,000 imperial-exam laureates over 600 years. A quiet Confucian sanctuary, the opposite of Yonghegong's bustle.
