My Trip

The most popular day trip from the city. Wander the canal village of Gubei Water Town at the foot of the Yan Mountains, then climb the illuminated Simatai Great Wall after dark. Simatai is the only night-open, lantern-lit wall in China, so it's worth it even if you've already seen the Great Wall. The direct bus from Dongzhimen takes about two hours each way, so plan an afternoon departure with a night-focused schedule.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Gubei Water Town古北水镇

    Nature · 180 min stay

A canal water town built at the foot of the Great Wall. Gondolas, dye workshops, breweries and traditional opera come together to bring Jiangnan water-town charm to Beijing's outskirts. At night, red lanterns reflected in the water are spectacular.

    Simatai Great Wall (Night-Open)司马台长城

Landmark · Night view · 120 min stay

A rugged, unrestored original section and the only night-open Great Wall in China. Riding the cable car up to walk the lantern-lit ramparts is an experience you can't have anywhere else.

Water Town Night View & Lakeside Dinner古北水镇 夜景

Restaurant · Night view · 90 min stay

Come down from the wall and finish with the night view over dinner of Miyun trout and wild vegetables at a canal-side restaurant. Check the last direct bus to Dongzhimen in advance to avoid a taxi-fare bomb.
