My Trip

Late March to early April only. Start at a garden gathering many varieties, then a moat boat and a shrine's benchmark tree, and in the evening a riverside light-up. The densest day of cherry blossoms in Tokyo.

    Shinjuku Gyoen新宿御苑

Shinjuku · Cherry blossoms · 75 min stay

About 1,000 trees of dozens of varieties bloom at different times, extending the flowering period. Tokyo's finest cherry garden where bento hanami on the broad lawn is possible. Even the late-blooming yae-zakura reaches full bloom.

    Chidorigafuchi千鳥ヶ淵

Cherry blossoms · Boat · 60 min stay

Tokyo's finest scene, a tunnel of cherry blossoms along the old imperial moat. Rent a boat and row beneath the lavish blossoms on the water for a picture-perfect view. The evening light-up is magical too.

    Yasukuni Shrine靖国神社

Cherry blossoms · 35 min stay

Home to the 'benchmark tree' that sets the standard for Tokyo's cherry-blossom declaration. Cherry trees bloom in a row along the long approach. Right beside Chidorigafuchi, so good to bundle together.

    Meguro River目黒川

    Nakameguro · Riverside · Illumination · 60 min stay

Tokyo's most trendy hanami spot, with cherry trees draping about 4km of both banks. Pink-lantern light-ups, blossoms reflected on the river, and champagne stalls. Flashy night sakura that contrasts with the daytime garden.
