My Trip

Tenma, Osaka's finest drinkers' district. A late-night course bar-hopping (hashigozake) through the standing bars and cheap-snack shops packed in the back alleys of Tenjinbashisuji, Japan's longest shopping street. The real Osaka night, drinking shoulder to shoulder with local office workers.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Osaka Tenmangu Shrine大阪天満宮

    Tenma · Shrine · 20 min stay

A shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the god of learning, and the center of the Tenjin Matsuri, one of Japan's three great festivals. It has meaning as a starting point to quietly worship at night and begin the neighborhood drink pilgrimage.

    Tenjinbashisuji Shopping Street天神橋筋商店街

    Tenma · Mall · 40 min stay

Japan's longest shopping street at about 2.6km. Working-class shops continue from district 1 to 7, with bars packed in the alleys on both sides. Just walking shows you Osaka's everyday working-class life.

  3. Walk 4 min
    3

    Sushi Harukoma Main Store春駒 本店

    Tenma · Seafood · 50 min stay

A legendary conveyor-belt sushi spot on Tenjinbashisuji. Thick neta at outrageous prices keep the lines long, but fresh maguro and gizzard shad pair magically with a drink. A symbol of Tenma gourmet.

    Tenma Standing-Bar Alley天満 立ち飲み横丁

    Tenma · Bar · 60 min stay

Standing bars (tachinomi) and cheap-snack shops cluster in the alleys between Tenma Station and the shopping street (a whole-alley area, not one specific shop). At a few hundred yen a glass with cheap snacks, it's a hashigozake paradise of moving between shops. A night rubbing shoulders with local workers.

    Tengo Nakazaki-dori天五中崎通商店街

    Alley · 30 min stay

A retro arcade branching off from Tenjinbashisuji's 5th district. Small bars and snacks open until late hide here, good for a last drink. The path that leads on to Nakazakicho.
